Als weiteren europäischen Zwergstaat betrachten wir nun die Republik San Marino. San Marino ist nach dem Staat Vatikanstadt und nach Monaco der drittkleinste europäische Zwergstaat. San Marino ist als Enklave von Italien umgeben. 24 km entfernt von San Mariono befindet sich Rimini an der adriatischen Küste. Die Republik San Marino hat eine Fläche von 60,57 km² und zählt 32.284 Einwohner. Als Hauptstadt gilt die Gemeinde San Marino. Die Grenze zu Italien hat eine Länge von 39 km.

San Marino ist die älteste bestehende Republik der Erde, als Gründungsdatum gilt der 3. September 301. Staatsoberhaupt sind jeweils für sechs Monate zwei Capitani Reggenti, derzeit Maurizio Rattini und Italo Righi. Regierungschef ist die Außenministerin Antonella Mularoni. San Marino besteht aus neun Gemeinden. Amtssprache ist Italienisch. Seit 1985 besitzt San Marino eine kleine Universität.

1865 schaffte San Marino als erster europäischer Staat die Todesstrafe ab. Die letzte bekannte Todesstrafe in San Marino wurde 1468 vollstreckt.
